The recent monsoon rains have caused havoc in Northern Pakistan in the last few days. Entire villages have literally been washed away in the area's worst flooding for 80 years. Currently it is estimated that 1,400 souls have lost their lives with as many as 3 million people being affected. Aid agencies are struggling to reach those affected as the flooding has brought down bridges and the return of the monsoon rains yesterday, Tuesday, grounded helicopters and raised fears of renewed flooding. The risk of water-borne diseases spreading remains high until the flood waters recede with reports of cholera in some areas. Food is scarce and water supplies are contaminated. Chlorine tablets are urgently required so that water can be treated before it is drunk. Those affected by these floods are in dire need of our support. The most urgent requirement includes boats, tents, clothing, clean drinking water, food items, emergency medical supplies and basic household items. Pakistan Human Development Fund UK has already sent £4,000 (US $6,000) to assist with the aid, but this is a tiny drop in the ocean of what is required to help those people suffering to survive and ultimately rebuild their lives. We urge you to please donate whatever amount you are able, to enable us to provide more relief effort. 3rd August 2010 |
